A catalogue of the species of the genus Lomaptera (Coleoptera, Cetoniidae) in the Leiden and Amsterdam Musea Naturalis
Jong, C. de.
After Mr. F. T. Valck Lucassen's decease in september 1939 his collections have been transported to the Leiden Museum for better preservation. In 1941 the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden, could acquire these considerable collections which also included those of Janson (London) and Girard (Geneva). These collections contain a great number of species, often represented by the types or series of types, many of which described by Valck Lucassen himself. In an obituary Uyttenboogaart (1940: 1-2) gave an enumeration of all papers by Valck Lucassen, most of which are on Cetonids. The monograph on the genus Lomaptera, announced by Uyttenboogaart, had to be translated, illustrated and to be made ready for printing; it was published in 1961 by the...

A new Hexagonia (Coleoptera, Carabidae) from Sumatra Naturalis
Jong, C. de.
When arranging a part of the Carabidae collection of the Leiden Museum, I noted that the specimens labelled Hexagonia lucassenii Van de Poll (1889: 249-250) did not constitute a homogeneous material. The material consisted of the original series of Hexagonia lucassenii from Java (Kamanglen, Tegal), and twelve specimens from Sumatra, viz., five specimens from Pagar Alam, four from Nirou(?), and three from Palembang. The Sumatran specimens were collected by J. Bouchard. The three specimens from Palembang were mounted on one pin, and bear a label (not distinctly legible) "konneri n.sp."; I presume this to be merely a museum name, probably given by Oberthür. I compared the specimens from Sumatra with the descriptions of Hexagonia-species known to occur in...

A "new" Nitidulid Beetle from Sumatra Naturalis
Jong, C. de.
Some time ago I was asked to identify a fossil coleopteron which had been found in the drill cuttings of an oil well in the Southern part of Sumatra. As the fossil is only a few millimetres long it may be mentioned as an amazing fact that so small an object has been found during rather rough work like oil drilling. The details of the locality as given by Mr. A. Wright Jr. of the N.V. Standard-Vacuum Petroleum Maatschappij are as follows: "The well is one of our Kaja wells, a wildcat well located 3.3 kilometres N. 300 E. from the northeast edge of the Djirah oilfield. The drill cutting was obtained from a depth of 1930 feet subsea. Although, in drill cuttings, there is a certain measure of uncertainty as to the exact level of derivation, we have sufficient...

A new Phyllophora (Orthoptera, Tettigoniidae, Phyllophorinae) from New Guinea Naturalis
Jong, C. de.
Only part of the very extensive entomological collections made in New Guinea during various expeditions by Dutch scientists has so far been studied, but this already yielded many new species. A first superficial survey of the Orthoptera in these collections provided a number of specimens of a species of Phyllophora, which proved distinct from any of the forms described before. As I believe the species to be new to science, it is described here as Phyllophora boschmai nov. spec., and named in honour of Professor Dr. H. Boschma, who for many years was my teacher and director at the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, and to whom I owe many thanks for his practical advices during my studies. The greater part of the specimens mentioned here have been...

A new variety of an Onomarchus from British India (Orthoptera, Tettigoniidae) Naturalis
Jong, C. de.
The following description was made after a single female specimen from the "Museum d' Histoire Naturelle" in Geneva. The specimen differs in some respects from the widely distributed and rather common Onomarchus uninotatus (Serville, 1839, p. 468) which is recorded from the southern part of China, Annam, Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Bangka, Amboina, Batu Islands and Australia, but on the other hand these differences are not of such a striking importance to separate it as a new species. I am inclined to consider the specimen as a local variety of O. uninotatus (Serv.) 1). Onomarchus uninotatus (Serv.) var. carli nov. var. Holotype: 1 ♀ from Mudomalai near Madura, South India, leg. Carl and Escher, 8-II-1927. In general shape and measurements the...

A rectification in the genus Apriona Naturalis
Jong, C. de.
Some time ago when examining some Batocerini (Cerambycidae, Lamiinae) I was struck by the strange pattern of Apriona fasciata Rits. (cf. Ritsema, Notes Leyden Mus., vol. 20, 1898, p. 87) of which species our Museum possesses a single female specimen, the unique type (fig. 1). Especially the "five naked transverse bands" puzzled me because no indication of such a zebra-pattern is found in any other known species of the genus Apriona. Examining the specimen very carefully I found out that these transverse bands were artificially produced by removing the yellowish scales from the elytra with a sharp object the marks of which are clearly seen under the microscope. This proves

Notes on Cerambycidae : I - XIV Naturalis
Jong, C. de.
Under the above title I intend to publish a number of short notes on Cerambycidae, including synonymies, descriptions of new species, etc. For the greater part the material on which these notes are based is from the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden. In other cases the collections are always indicated. Each set of notes published together will be arranged according to Aurivillius in Coleopterorum Catalogus (JunkSchenkling), parts 52, 39, 73 and 74. I. Notes on Phyllophorinae (Orthoptera, Tettigoniidae) from new Guinea Orthopterological Notes VII 1) Naturalis
Jong, C. de.
In the present paper I have brought together the results of my studies of material from various collections made in New Guinea. One new genus and some new species are described and figured, viz., Microsasima gen. nov. related to Phyllophorina, with as type-species Microsasima stueberi spec. nov.; Phyllophora cheesmanae spec. nov., and Phyllophora similis spec. nov. Further the paper gives new information concerning species previously described from one sex only, viz., Sasima bifurcate Bolívar I., ♀ plesioallotype; also information is presented on the infraspecific variability and geographical distribution of some other species. The basis for the modern study of the subfamily is Karny's monograph (Karny, 1924), which gives considerable information on most...

Notes on the types of Gnathoclita vorax (Stoll) (Tettigoniidae, Pteropphyllinae) Naturalis
Jong, C. de.
A remark of one of my colleagues that the ♀ of Gnathoclita vorax (Stoll) is still unknown, urged me to find out whether this was true, as I remembered to have seen both ♂ and ♀ specimens in the collections of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden, and of the Naturhistorisches Museum, Vienna. Furthermore, Beier ( 1960: 240) remarked recently of G. vorax that the type is lost ('Typus verschollen"). Fortunately I can state now that the male type of Stoll's Gryllus Acheta vorax is still present, though slightly damaged. In the Leiden collection there are, apart from this type, more specimens of the species, one ♂ and one ♀; both bear a label in the handwriting of W. de Haan, who from 1822 to 1846 was curator of the invertebrate collections of the...

On Indo-Malayan Pterophyllinae (Orthoptera, Family Tettigoniidae) Naturalis
Jong, C. de.
The family Tettigoniidae consists of the long-horned grasshoppers with a more or less distinct sword-shaped ovipositor and with a distinct auditory organ at the proximal part of the fore tibiae. Handlirsch unites into this family 14 subfamilies of which the Pterophyllinae only are considered here. Concerning the name Tettigoniidae the opinions were diverging, but in recent literature this name is generally used. In the 10th edition of Linné's Systema Naturae (1758) a number of species of the genus Gryllus are united into the subgenus Tettigonia. This subgenus was considered as a genus by Fabricius and it would have been logical if he had kept the Linnean name Tettigonia for it. Fabricius, however, mixed up the Linnean names and called the here-mentioned...

Orthopterological notes I : On the Lesini of the Leiden Museum (Tettigoniidae, Copiphorinae) Naturalis
Jong, C. de.
When rearranging a part of the collections of Orthoptera in the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden I found a number of specimens belonging to this tribus, which by former authors is considered as a separate subfamily with the name Eumegalodontinae (Kirby, 1906, p. 289; Caudell, 1927, p. 30). With Karny I think it justified to let it retain its place as a tribe of the Copiphorinae. The representatives of this group are of such a remarkable shape that they can easily be recognized among the other Copiphorinae by their relatively big head and strangely shaped prothorax, which bears strongly spined lateral processes on the disc. The species under consideration can be divided into two groups, in the one of these the specimens possess a number of...

Orthopterological notes II : The Phyllophorinae (Orthoptera, Tettigoniidae) in the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden, and in the Zoölogisch Museum, Amsterdam Naturalis
Jong, C. de.
Besides the rather scanty material collected before 1900 the Phyllophorinае of the Leiden and the Amsterdam Museums consist of many of Karny's type specimens, and a number of specimens collected in New Guinea, especially by Van Kampen and by Versteeg. Though various authors (Kirby, 1899; Griffini, 1908) published papers of fundamental value concerning this subfamily of the Tettigoniidae, the general survey given by Caudell (1912) was little critical, in different genera even species are placed here of which the synonymy had already been established before (cf. Karny, 1924, pp. 19, 20). A modern revision of the subfamily was given by Karny (1924). Though Karny based his paper on a rather large number of specimens and a great deal of literature, it appears...

Orthopterological notes III : The Phyllophorinae (Orthoptera, Tettigoniidae) in Mr. Willemse's Collection (Eijgelshoven, Limburg) and in the Natuurhistorisch Museum, Rotterdam Naturalis
Jong, C. de.
In 1946, after the war, I had the opportunity again to visit my friend Mr. C. Willemse, and to study the Phyllophorinae in his collection. At the same time I could examine two specimens from the Rotterdam Museum, belonging to the subfamily, which had been sent to him for identification. Especially these last mentioned two specimens are very interesting, the one being the still unknown ♂ of Sasima areolata Bol., the second a somewhat aberrant ♀ specimen of Phyllophora keyica Brunner v. Watt. For the literature I may refer to Orthopterological Notes II (De Jong, 1946). The sequence of the species is according to Karny (1924) Sasima spinosa Brunner von Wattenwyl Mr. C. Willemse's Collection: New Guinea: 1 ? (abdomen damaged). Sasima lactuca Bolívar Mr. C....

Orthopterological notes IV Notes on Indomalayan and African Pterophyl-Linae (Tettigoniidae) Naturalis
Jong, C. de.
The present paper contains a number of new facts concerning Indomalayan Pterophyllinae, which came to my attention after the publication of my first paper on this subfamily (De Jong, 1938 1))· Further it contains the description of new species: Cymatomera blötei and Tegrolcinia karnyi, an allotype: ♂ Olcinia dentata De Jong, three plesioallotypes: ♂ Phyllomimus punctiger Karny, ♀ Tympanoptera annulata Karny, and ♂ Heteraprium inversum (Brunner v. Watt.), and it gives more details about a number of genera and their interrelation, e.g., Morsimus Stål and allied genera. More details are also given of a number of species hitherto insufficiently known, indomalayan as well as african species. Moreover, some material is mentioned which I identified for other...

P. A. Blijdorp in dit laboratorium ondergebracht.

Some remarks on Cicindela saetigera Horn Naturalis
Jong, C. de.
In 1936 five specimens of the beautiful beetle Cicindela saetigera Horn (fig. 1) were collected by Prof. Dr. L. G. M. Baas Becking and Dr. J. Reuter on their journey in Australia and kindly given to the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden. As this rather uncommon species was new to the collections of the Museum I studied the literature on the species in more detail, especially after Prof. Baas Becking had told me a few details concerning its life conditions. Our specimens, all males, were caught at the following dates and localities: 4 specimens, March 27, 1936. Lake Bumbunga, N. from Bay St. Vincent, S. Australia. 1 specimen, April 15, 1936. Lake Crosbie, SW. from Mildura, N.W.Victoria. First of all I can state, that in most of the papers...
